Executive thesis
Autodesk is one of the most deeply embedded software companies in the global design, architecture, engineering, construction and manufacturing industries. Its products are used at the point where physical assets are designed, engineered and increasingly operated.
The traditional investment thesis around Autodesk has been based on subscription revenue, high switching costs and the enormous installed base of AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion and other professional tools.
The next phase of the Autodesk story may be substantially more interesting.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to move from a separate productivity tool into the actual design environment. Autodesk is integrating AI directly into AutoCAD, Fusion, Forma, Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor and other applications.
Foxorox thesis: Autodesk should increasingly be viewed not simply as a CAD software vendor, but as a data and AI platform for the entire lifecycle of physical assets. If Autodesk successfully connects design, manufacturing, construction and operations into one continuous data environment, its economic moat could become stronger rather than weaker in the AI era. At the same time, the stock has fallen materially from its highs, creating a potentially attractive combination of improving fundamentals, strong free cash flow and lower valuation.
1. Autodesk is much more than AutoCAD
The Autodesk ecosystem spans several major markets:
- architecture and building design,
- construction management,
- civil engineering,
- mechanical engineering,
- product design,
- manufacturing,
- digital twins,
- media and entertainment,
- operations and asset management.
Products including AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion, Civil 3D, Inventor, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Forma, Maya and 3ds Max create a broad professional software ecosystem.
This matters because professional design data is extremely difficult to replace.
A building, factory or mechanical product can remain in development for years and in operation for decades. Changing the underlying software platform is therefore considerably more difficult than switching a normal consumer application.
The result is one of Autodesk's most important economic advantages: high switching costs.
2. Q2 FY2027 – strong growth despite a difficult software market
Autodesk reported second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $2.046 billion, representing growth of approximately 16% year over year.
Constant-currency revenue increased approximately 14%.
Billings reached $1.854 billion, while current remaining performance obligations increased 12% to approximately $5.245 billion.
| Q2 FY2027 metric | Result | YoY change | Foxorox interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $2.046B | +16% | Healthy double-digit growth despite Autodesk already operating at very large scale. |
| Billings | $1.854B | +10% | Continued growth in customer spending. |
| GAAP operating margin | 29% | +4 ppt | Operating leverage is becoming increasingly visible. |
| Non-GAAP operating margin | 41% | +2 ppt | Very high profitability for a company still growing revenue at double digits. |
| GAAP EPS | $2.33 | +$0.87 YoY | Strong earnings growth. |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $3.30 | +$0.68 YoY | Profit growth remains faster than underlying revenue growth. |
| Operating cash flow | $575M | +25% | Strong conversion of accounting earnings into cash. |
| Free cash flow | $561M | +24% | One of the strongest elements of the Autodesk investment thesis. |
3. Autodesk raised its FY2027 outlook
Following the quarter, management increased fiscal 2027 revenue and billings guidance.
| FY2027 guidance | Current outlook | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $8.295B – $8.345B | Higher underlying growth expectations plus MaintainX contribution. |
| Billings | $8.575B – $8.650B | Supports continued expansion of the subscription base. |
| Non-GAAP operating margin | ~39% | Very high operating profitability despite acquisition dilution. |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $12.52 – $12.60 | Provides strong visibility into FY2027 earnings. |
| Free cash flow | $2.725B – $2.750B | Autodesk remains an extremely strong cash-generating software business. |
4. Free cash flow changes the valuation story
Autodesk generated approximately $2.84 billion of free cash flow over the latest twelve months.
With a market capitalization around $45.5 billion, the corresponding free-cash-flow yield is approximately 6.2%.
This is unusually important because the stock is often described as an expensive software company based only on its P/E ratio.
The cash-flow valuation tells a more nuanced story.
A software company capable of generating more than one dollar of free cash flow for roughly every three dollars of revenue has significant economic flexibility.
5. Autodesk AI could become a meaningful new moat
Autodesk's AI strategy is particularly interesting because the company owns large amounts of highly structured professional design and engineering context.
Generic language models understand text.
Autodesk's opportunity is different. Its software understands:
- geometry,
- building models,
- engineering constraints,
- manufacturing processes,
- CAD relationships,
- materials,
- construction data,
- project context,
- and operational information.
This means AI can potentially move beyond simply answering questions. It can eventually perform engineering actions.
Autodesk Assistant
Autodesk Assistant is being integrated directly into Autodesk products.
In Fusion, the system can already assist users through natural-language interaction and, in Tech Preview, can perform selected tasks on behalf of the user.
Capabilities include:
- creating and modifying designs through natural language,
- querying design models,
- providing manufacturing guidance,
- executing commands,
- generating design visualizations,
- and helping users navigate complex engineering workflows.
Forma – AI-native architecture and construction
Autodesk is also positioning Forma as an AI-native industry cloud for architecture, engineering and construction.
Autodesk Construction Cloud is increasingly integrated into Forma, creating a continuous data layer across design and construction.
The strategic importance is significant.
AI becomes much more valuable when it has access to the complete context of a building or infrastructure project instead of operating on isolated files.
6. MaintainX expands Autodesk beyond design
In August 2026 Autodesk completed the acquisition of MaintainX.
The transaction was valued at approximately $3.5–3.6 billion.
MaintainX provides software used for maintenance, asset management and industrial operations.
This may initially look unrelated to AutoCAD or Revit, but strategically the acquisition is highly logical.
Autodesk wants to connect:
DESIGN → MAKE → BUILD → OPERATE
Historically Autodesk was strongest at the beginning of this chain. MaintainX extends the company toward the operating life of physical assets.
Why this matters: A factory designed using Autodesk tools could eventually remain connected to Autodesk throughout its operational life. Design data, digital twins, maintenance data and real-world operating information could flow through one ecosystem. This potentially increases customer lifetime value while making the Autodesk platform substantially more difficult to replace.
7. Valuation comparison – Autodesk vs PTC vs Bentley Systems
To assess Autodesk's valuation, Foxorox compares it with two major engineering-software peers: PTC and Bentley Systems.
| Metric | Autodesk | PTC | Bentley Systems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ticker | NASDAQ: ADSK | NASDAQ: PTC | NASDAQ: BSY |

8. The surprising result: Autodesk is not obviously expensive
The comparison produces an interesting result.
Autodesk has the largest market capitalization of the group, but several of its current valuation measures are no longer materially more expensive than its smaller competitors.
On forward earnings:
- Autodesk: approximately 16.8×
- PTC: approximately 16.8×
- Bentley Systems: approximately 23.2×
Autodesk therefore trades at a lower forward earnings multiple than Bentley, despite having:
- a much larger installed user base,
- higher gross margins,
- higher free-cash-flow margins,
- a net-cash balance sheet before full MaintainX financing effects,
- and considerably broader exposure across design and manufacturing.
9. Free cash flow is where Autodesk looks particularly strong
| Company | TTM Revenue | TTM FCF | FCF Margin | P / FCF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk | $7.79B | $2.84B | 36.4% | 16.0× |
| PTC | $2.95B | $935M | 31.7% | 16.4× |
| Bentley Systems | $1.60B | $499M | 31.1% | 21.0× |
Autodesk currently generates the highest FCF margin of the three, while its price-to-free-cash-flow ratio is slightly below PTC and significantly below Bentley.
For a company still producing double-digit organic growth, this is arguably more attractive than the headline P/E ratio suggests.
10. Autodesk versus PTC
PTC is a strong competitor, particularly in product lifecycle management, industrial software and engineering.
Its portfolio includes Creo, Windchill, Codebeamer and ServiceMax. The company is increasingly focused on what it calls the Intelligent Product Lifecycle.
PTC reported constant-currency ARR growth of approximately 9.1% excluding divested businesses in its fiscal third quarter 2026. Management also raised full-year guidance for ARR, revenue and EPS.
PTC is currently cheaper than Autodesk on trailing P/E and EV/EBITDA.
However, Autodesk has several advantages:
- approximately 2.6× the revenue scale,
- much broader exposure to architecture and construction,
- higher gross margin,
- higher FCF margin,
- higher ROIC,
- and broader AI deployment across multiple professional applications.
Foxorox view: PTC may currently be the cheaper pure industrial-software investment, but Autodesk appears to have the larger platform opportunity.
11. Autodesk versus Bentley Systems
Bentley Systems is one of Autodesk's most important competitors in infrastructure engineering.
The company is particularly strong in transportation infrastructure, civil engineering, utilities and digital twins.
Bentley reported Q2 2026 revenue of $410.7 million, up approximately 12.8% year over year. Subscription revenue increased approximately 13.6%.
ARR reached approximately $1.536 billion, while free cash flow increased to $63.8 million for the quarter.
Bentley is an excellent business.
But its valuation is demanding.
At approximately:
- 37× trailing earnings,
- 23× forward earnings,
- 6.5× sales,
- and 24.8× EV/EBITDA,
Bentley trades at a premium to Autodesk across several key measures.
This is particularly interesting because Autodesk is currently growing revenue at approximately 16% while Bentley's latest quarterly growth was around 13%.
12. Autodesk's strongest financial advantage: returns on capital
Autodesk's current return on invested capital is approximately 57.6%.
For comparison:
| Company | ROIC | FCF Margin | Gross Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk | 57.6% | 36.4% | 92.5% |
| PTC | 19.7% | 31.7% | 84.5% |
| Bentley Systems | 13.6% | 31.1% | 81.8% |
This is one of the strongest arguments for Autodesk.
The company converts a relatively asset-light software platform into exceptionally high returns on invested capital.
13. The AI opportunity is larger than simply selling an AI add-on
The obvious AI strategy would be to add a chatbot to AutoCAD and charge customers an additional subscription fee.
That may eventually generate incremental revenue, but it is not the most important part of the opportunity.
The bigger opportunity is automation.
Engineering workflows contain enormous amounts of repetitive work:
- drawing modifications,
- standards checking,
- documentation,
- design iteration,
- quantity extraction,
- manufacturing preparation,
- model interrogation,
- project coordination,
- compliance checking,
- and simulation preparation.
If AI can automate even part of these tasks, the economic value of Autodesk software per employee can rise materially.
That gives Autodesk a potential path toward higher average revenue per user without simply increasing conventional subscription prices.
14. Data may become more valuable than the software itself
The most strategically important asset inside Autodesk may eventually be neither AutoCAD nor Revit.
It may be the accumulated design context flowing through the ecosystem.
AI performance improves when the system has access to relevant, structured and contextual data.
Autodesk software sits directly inside the workflows where buildings, products and infrastructure are created.
This gives Autodesk access to the type of context necessary for domain-specific engineering AI.
The potential flywheel: More Autodesk users → more connected project data → better AI context → greater automation → higher customer productivity → higher platform value → greater incentive to remain inside Autodesk.
15. Why MaintainX may prove strategically important
The MaintainX acquisition extends this flywheel into physical operations.
Imagine a factory.
The building can be designed using Autodesk software.
Production systems can be modeled using Autodesk tools.
Manufacturing workflows can run through Fusion.
The facility can be represented as a digital twin.
MaintainX can then collect information about equipment maintenance and real-world operations.
The long-term vision is a closed loop:
DESIGN DATA → BUILD → OPERATE → REAL-WORLD DATA → AI → BETTER DESIGN
If Autodesk can build this loop successfully, the value of the platform extends far beyond CAD licenses.
16. Analyst expectations
Current analyst consensus remains constructive.
| Company | Consensus | Average target | Approx. upside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk | Buy | $315.37 | ~45% |
| PTC | Buy | $173.35 | ~23% |
| Bentley Systems | Buy | $44.47 | ~32% |
The spread between Autodesk's current market price and the analyst consensus target is substantial.
Consensus targets should never be treated as intrinsic value, but they show that the current market price is materially below the level many analysts associate with normalized long-term earnings.
17. Why has Autodesk fallen?
The bullish thesis should not ignore the reasons for the weak share-price performance.
Autodesk shares have declined materially over the last twelve months.
Important concerns include:
- uncertainty surrounding the sales reorganization,
- investor caution toward the wider software sector,
- higher interest rates affecting software multiples,
- questions around the return on the MaintainX acquisition,
- continued stock-based compensation,
- and the possibility that AI disrupts traditional software pricing.
These risks are real.
However, the latest operating results do not currently indicate a deterioration in the core Autodesk business.
18. Bull case
In the bullish scenario:
- revenue growth remains around low-to-mid teens,
- operating margin remains near 40% on a non-GAAP basis,
- FCF approaches or exceeds $3 billion,
- AI increases productivity and monetization,
- MaintainX creates cross-selling opportunities,
- Forma strengthens Autodesk's position in AEC,
- and investors rerate the company closer to premium vertical SaaS peers.
Under this scenario today's valuation could look unusually conservative.
19. Base case
The base case does not require an AI revolution.
Autodesk only needs to continue executing its existing business model.
If revenue grows approximately 10–13%, free-cash-flow margins remain above 30%, and the company continues repurchasing shares, earnings and cash flow per share can continue increasing at an attractive rate.
AI then becomes additional optionality rather than a requirement for the investment thesis.
20. Bear case
The major risks are:
- AI reducing the value of traditional CAD licenses,
- open-source or generative design platforms increasing competition,
- MaintainX failing to generate an adequate acquisition return,
- slower construction or manufacturing activity,
- customers resisting continued pricing increases,
- and sustained compression in software valuation multiples.
Autodesk must also ensure that generative AI improves its ecosystem rather than allowing external AI agents to bypass the Autodesk interface.
21. Comparative Foxorox scorecard

22. Foxorox conclusion
Autodesk is not a cheap company in the traditional value-investing sense.
But valuation must be considered relative to business quality.
At approximately:
- 16.8× forward earnings,
- 16× trailing free cash flow,
- 5.2× forward sales,
- and a free-cash-flow yield above 6%,
Autodesk no longer appears exceptionally expensive relative to the quality of its business.
More importantly, current valuation metrics do not require Autodesk to become the dominant AI company.
The underlying business already produces:
- double-digit revenue growth,
- more than 90% gross margin,
- more than 36% FCF margin,
- very high returns on invested capital,
- and billions of dollars in recurring cash generation.
Foxorox final thesis: The market may currently be valuing Autodesk primarily as a mature CAD software company. We believe the more interesting interpretation is that Autodesk is becoming the data and intelligence layer for the physical world. Its competitive advantage comes from the combination of professional design software, deeply embedded workflows, proprietary project context, high switching costs and an expanding AI layer. The MaintainX acquisition extends this strategy from design and construction into operations. If Autodesk successfully connects Design + Make + Build + Operate, the addressable market and customer lifetime value can expand materially. At roughly 16× free cash flow and approximately 17× forward earnings, the current valuation appears increasingly interesting relative to both Autodesk's historical quality and selected engineering-software peers.
Foxorox relative view
| Company | Investment profile | Primary strength | Primary risk | Foxorox view |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autodesk | Large-cap vertical software + AI | Scale, FCF, ecosystem and AI/data optionality | Execution around AI and MaintainX | Most attractive risk/reward of the three |
| PTC | Industrial software / PLM | Low valuation and strong industrial position | Lower growth and narrower ecosystem | Attractive value alternative |
| Bentley Systems | Infrastructure engineering software | Excellent niche and recurring revenue | Higher valuation | High-quality business, less attractive valuation |
