Executive thesis
Zebra Technologies and Nordson Corporation are two very different companies, but they currently share one unusual characteristic in the Foxorox model:
Both stocks are showing bearish sentiment despite very strong recent financial results.
This creates an interesting analytical setup. The bearish view is not based on collapsing revenue, weak margins or deteriorating order books. In fact, both companies recently delivered some of the strongest quarters in their histories.
Zebra reported second-quarter 2026 revenue growth of 20.4%, adjusted EPS growth of 75.9% and a 710-basis-point expansion in adjusted EBITDA margin. Nordson reported record quarterly sales of $818 million, adjusted EPS growth of 19%, a 32% EBITDA margin and backlog growth of 35%.
Therefore the question is not:
"Are these bad companies?"
They are not.
The more useful question is:
"Have the stocks moved far enough ahead of the underlying fundamentals that near-term downside risk now exceeds near-term upside?"
That distinction is fundamental to the Foxorox bearish thesis. A strong company can still become a weak short-term investment at the wrong price.
1. What Zebra Technologies actually does
Zebra Technologies is much more than the barcode-printer company many investors still associate with the name. The company has evolved into a broad enterprise digitization and automation platform focused on what it calls intelligent operations and increasingly frontline AI.
Its technologies are used across:
- retail,
- warehousing and logistics,
- manufacturing,
- transportation,
- healthcare,
- field service,
- and asset tracking.
The product portfolio includes:
- mobile computers,
- barcode scanners,
- industrial and mobile printers,
- RFID systems,
- machine vision,
- fixed industrial scanning,
- workforce software,
- asset visibility systems,
- and automation solutions.
The strategic direction is easy to understand. More physical operations are becoming digitally visible, machine-readable and increasingly automated.
2. Zebra is becoming an AI-at-the-edge company
The term "AI" is often associated with hyperscale data centers and GPUs. Zebra participates in a different part of the architecture: AI at the physical edge.
Its systems help frontline workers and industrial environments identify:
- what an object is,
- where it is,
- whether it has moved,
- whether it has been scanned,
- whether a package is correct,
- whether a manufacturing process is within tolerance,
- and what action should happen next.
The company's long-term opportunity therefore sits at the intersection of:
automation + machine vision + RFID + connected workers + physical AI.
That is strategically attractive. But the stock market has already recognized much of this improvement.
3. Zebra Q2 2026 – the headline numbers were exceptional
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $1.557B | $1.293B | +20.4% |
| Organic sales growth | 9.2% | — | Strong |
| GAAP gross margin | 53.0% | 47.6% | +540 bps |
| Adjusted gross margin | 53.3% | 47.9% | +540 bps |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $431M | $267M | +61.4% |
| Adjusted EBITDA margin | 27.7% | 20.6% | +710 bps |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $6.35 | $3.61 | +75.9% |
| GAAP net income | $233M | $112M | +108% |
On the surface there is almost nothing bearish in these numbers.
Revenue growth was strong. Margins expanded dramatically. Earnings increased much faster than sales. The company raised guidance.
This explains why Zebra shares reacted so strongly after earnings.
4. But Zebra's 20.4% growth needs to be decomposed
The first reason for caution is that reported growth and underlying organic growth are materially different.
Reported revenue increased:
20.4%
But organic sales growth was:
9.2%
The difference reflects acquisitions, currency and other consolidation effects.
This does not make the quarter weak. Nine percent organic growth for a company of Zebra's size is healthy.
But it changes the interpretation. The headline number suggests a company growing above 20%. The underlying business is currently growing closer to high-single-digit / low-double-digit territory.
| Growth measure | Q2 2026 | Foxorox interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Reported sales growth | 20.4% | Excellent headline number. |
| Organic sales growth | 9.2% | Still strong, but materially below the headline figure. |
| Difference | 11.2 percentage points | Shows how much reported growth is influenced by non-organic effects. |
5. Zebra's extraordinary margin expansion also includes unusual benefits
Adjusted gross margin increased from 47.9% to 53.3%. That is a remarkable 540-basis-point improvement.
However, Zebra specifically stated that gross margin benefited from IEEPA tariff recoveries and favorable foreign exchange.
The company recorded:
$73 million
of IEEPA tariff recoveries.
This matters because investors should distinguish between:
- structural margin improvement,
- operating leverage,
- pricing,
- product mix,
- and items that may not repeat every quarter.
The bearish argument is not that Zebra's margins are weak. It is that Q2's 27.7% adjusted EBITDA margin should not automatically be extrapolated as a permanent new quarterly baseline.
6. Memory costs are an interesting risk for Zebra
Zebra is also exposed to the same memory-cost cycle that is affecting many hardware manufacturers. Management has discussed substantial full-year memory cost pressure while working to secure supply and offset cost increases through pricing and supplier actions.
This is particularly relevant after the recent acceleration in DRAM and memory pricing.
Zebra does not manufacture memory. It buys components that ultimately become part of mobile computers, scanners and other intelligent devices.
Therefore:
higher memory pricing can become a gross-margin headwind unless Zebra successfully passes those costs to customers.
This is not currently destroying profitability, but it creates another reason to avoid assuming the unusually strong Q2 margin will rise indefinitely.
7. Zebra raised full-year guidance substantially
| FY2026 guidance | Current outlook |
|---|---|
| Sales growth | 14%–16% |
| Acquisition / disposition / FX contribution | ~8 percentage points |
| Adjusted EBITDA margin | 23.5%–24.0% |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $20.75–$21.25 |
| Free cash flow | >$1.0B |
Again, these are excellent numbers.
But approximately eight percentage points of expected full-year reported sales growth come from acquisitions, dispositions and currency.
That means the underlying organic growth profile is again much more moderate than the top-line headline suggests.
8. Zebra's valuation after the rally
Using consensus estimates available in late August 2026, Zebra trades at approximately:
| Metric | 2026E | 2027E | 2028E |
|---|---|---|---|
| P/E | ~24.3x | ~22.1x | ~19.4x |
| EV / Revenue | ~3.09x | ~2.83x | ~2.58x |
| EV / EBITDA | ~13.0x | ~12.3x | ~11.0x |
| EV / FCF | ~18.7x | ~16.9x | ~14.9x |
| FCF yield | ~5.35% | ~5.93% | ~6.70% |
| Consensus EPS | ~$14.89 | ~$16.34 | ~$18.58 |
This is not an absurd valuation.
But it is no longer obviously cheap after the sharp rerating.
The latest completed market close on August 28 was approximately $356.45, after the stock had reached a 52-week high of $386.23 earlier in August.
In other words, much of the earnings recovery is already reflected in the share price.
9. Why Foxorox can be bearish on Zebra without being bearish on the company
This distinction is crucial.
The fundamental view can remain constructive:
- automation demand is strong,
- physical AI is a real secular theme,
- RFID and machine vision are attractive markets,
- cash generation is strong,
- management is buying back shares,
- and guidance is improving.
But the short-term market setup can simultaneously become less attractive.
Foxorox current signal: BEARISH.
The signal should be interpreted as a short-term probability assessment,
not as a statement that Zebra's long-term business is broken.
After a major earnings surprise and a very large upward repricing, the stock must continue producing positive surprises merely to maintain momentum.
That creates asymmetric expectations.
10. What Nordson Corporation actually does
Nordson is a very different business.
It is a precision technology company whose equipment is used to dispense, apply, inspect and control extremely precise amounts of materials in industrial processes.
Its end markets include:
- electronics,
- semiconductors,
- medical devices,
- packaging,
- consumer products,
- industrial coatings,
- adhesives,
- polymer processing,
- and advanced manufacturing.
Nordson is exactly the kind of industrial business that often remains invisible to consumers while being deeply embedded inside its customers' production lines.
11. Why Nordson is such a high-quality industrial business
Nordson's strength is not based on selling commodity machinery.
Its equipment often handles relatively small, but mission-critical parts of the manufacturing process.
For example:
- precision adhesive dispensing,
- fluid management,
- electronics dispensing,
- test and inspection,
- medical fluid components,
- and industrial process control.
If a Nordson system represents only a small percentage of a customer's total factory cost but failure of that system can stop production, the customer is usually less sensitive to the equipment's absolute price.
That helps explain Nordson's unusually strong margins.
12. Nordson Q3 FY2026 was also exceptional
| Metric | Q3 FY2026 | YoY change |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | $818M | +10% |
| Organic sales | — | ~+12% |
| GAAP EPS | $2.73 | +23% |
| Adjusted EPS | $3.25 | +19% |
| EBITDA | $262M | +10% |
| EBITDA margin | 32% | Flat at an exceptionally high level |
| Backlog | — | +35% |
These are outstanding industrial-company results.
Revenue reached an all-time quarterly record. EPS reached a record. Adjusted EPS reached a record. EBITDA reached a record. Backlog increased 35%.
Again, the bearish Foxorox signal is deliberately counterintuitive.
13. Advanced Technology Solutions is the most interesting part of Nordson
Nordson's Advanced Technology Solutions segment is particularly relevant for investors interested in electronics, semiconductors and AI infrastructure.
Q3 segment sales reached approximately:
$220 million
representing approximately:
+28% YoY
with organic growth of approximately:
+31%.
The growth was driven by electronics dispense and test-and-inspection product lines.
Segment EBITDA reached:
$66 million
or approximately:
30% margin.
This makes Nordson an indirect beneficiary of increasing electronics manufacturing complexity.
14. Nordson also raised full-year guidance
| FY2026 guidance | New range |
|---|---|
| Sales | $3.035B–$3.075B |
| Adjusted EPS | $11.80–$12.00 |
| Backlog entering Q4 | +35% YoY |
Management described order-entry momentum as strong and expects the first nine months' momentum to continue into Q4.
There is therefore no obvious fundamental recession visible in the latest company data.
15. So why can Nordson still be bearish?
Because price matters.
Nordson shares closed at approximately:
$324.59
on August 28.
Only two days earlier the stock had reached a 52-week high of:
$339.12.
After Q3 earnings, the stock rose approximately 8% in one session.
The business is strong. But the share price has rapidly repriced that strength.
16. Nordson's valuation is demanding
| Metric | 2026E | 2027E | 2028E |
|---|---|---|---|
| P/E | ~30.6x | ~27.3x | ~24.8x |
| EV / Revenue | ~6.3x | ~5.87x | ~5.48x |
| EV / EBITDA | ~19.6x | ~18.1x | ~17.0x |
| EV / FCF | ~28.1x | ~26.5x | ~24.1x |
| FCF yield | ~3.56% | ~3.78% | ~4.15% |
| Consensus EPS | ~$10.10 | ~$11.30 | ~$12.44 |
Nordson deserves a premium because it is a high-quality industrial compounder.
But approximately 30x current-year earnings and almost 20x EV/EBITDA is a demanding valuation for a business with consensus revenue around $3 billion and a long-run growth rate far below high-growth software or semiconductor companies.
17. Nordson vs Zebra – valuation makes the difference clearer
| Metric – 2026E | Zebra | Nordson | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| P/E | ~24.3x | ~30.6x | Zebra |
| EV / Revenue | ~3.09x | ~6.30x | Zebra |
| EV / EBITDA | ~13.0x | ~19.6x | Zebra |
| EV / FCF | ~18.7x | ~28.1x | Zebra |
| FCF yield | ~5.35% | ~3.56% | Zebra |
Nordson is clearly the more expensive stock on almost every major forward valuation metric.
That does not make Zebra automatically attractive. But it does mean the margin for disappointment is materially smaller for Nordson.
18. Growth vs valuation
| Metric | Zebra | Nordson |
|---|---|---|
| Latest reported sales growth | +20.4% | +10% |
| Latest organic growth | +9.2% | ~+12% |
| Latest adjusted EPS growth | +75.9% | +19% |
| 2026E P/E | ~24.3x | ~30.6x |
| 2026E EV/EBITDA | ~13.0x | ~19.6x |
Zebra currently offers the stronger headline growth at the lower valuation.
Nordson offers a more stable high-quality industrial model, but investors are paying a substantial premium for that quality.
19. Why a bearish signal after good earnings can make sense
Markets do not trade on whether results are objectively good or bad. They trade on the difference between:
expectations and reality.
A company can report excellent numbers and still become vulnerable if:
- the stock already rallied heavily before or after earnings,
- valuation expands faster than future earnings,
- one-time benefits improve reported margins,
- future growth is less impressive than the latest quarter,
- or investors begin taking profits after a major positive surprise.
That is precisely the situation Foxorox is currently flagging.
20. Zebra – bull case vs bear case
| Bull case | Bear case |
|---|---|
| Physical AI becomes a major industrial investment theme. | Stock has already repriced strongly after Q2. |
| Mobile computing, RFID and machine vision keep growing. | Organic growth is materially below reported growth. |
| Margins remain structurally above historical levels. | Q2 margin benefited from tariff recoveries and FX. |
| FCF exceeds $1B and buybacks support EPS. | Memory costs can pressure hardware margins. |
| Acquisitions expand addressable markets. | Integration and acquisition-driven growth can obscure underlying momentum. |
Foxorox near-term view: BEARISH.
Long-term business quality remains positive.
21. Nordson – bull case vs bear case
| Bull case | Bear case |
|---|---|
| Backlog +35% indicates strong future demand. | Stock is trading close to record highs. |
| ATS organic growth of 31% is exceptional. | ~30x P/E leaves little room for disappointment. |
| 32% EBITDA margin demonstrates pricing power. | ~20x EV/EBITDA is a premium industrial valuation. |
| Precision equipment creates high switching costs. | FCF yield remains only around 3.5–4%. |
| Electronics and semiconductor exposure supports growth. | A normalization in electronics orders could compress the multiple quickly. |
Foxorox near-term view: BEARISH.
Fundamental business quality remains exceptionally high.
22. Which stock looks more vulnerable?
On pure valuation, Nordson appears more vulnerable.
At approximately 30x current-year earnings, 19–20x EV/EBITDA and around 28x EV/FCF, investors are already paying a significant quality premium.
Zebra trades at lower multiples and currently has a faster earnings-growth profile.
However, Zebra's stock has also experienced a significant rerating, and some of the latest quarter's margin expansion came from factors that should not automatically be extrapolated.
| Risk factor | Zebra | Nordson |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation risk | Medium | High |
| Organic-growth risk | Medium | Low / Medium |
| One-time benefit risk | Higher | Lower |
| Cyclicality | Medium | Medium |
| Post-rally mean-reversion risk | High | High |
| Long-term business quality | High | Very high |
23. Bearish does not mean "short at any price"
This point is important.
A probabilistic bearish signal should not be interpreted as certainty.
The Foxorox model is designed to identify short-term directional probabilities, not to replace fundamental analysis.
The fundamental data for both companies remain strong.
Therefore the most rational interpretation is:
Risk/reward has deteriorated after major rallies, and the probability of near-term consolidation or correction has increased.
That is materially different from claiming that either business is in structural decline.
24. What would invalidate the bearish view?
Zebra
The bearish setup would weaken if Zebra continues to deliver:
- organic growth above 10%,
- structurally higher gross margins after tariff effects normalize,
- FCF materially above $1 billion,
- continued strength in mobile computing, RFID and machine vision,
- and another meaningful upward revision to guidance.
Nordson
The bearish setup would weaken if Nordson continues to deliver:
- double-digit organic growth,
- ATS growth close to current levels,
- 32%+ EBITDA margins,
- continued backlog expansion,
- and earnings growth sufficient to rapidly compress the forward multiple.
25. What would confirm the bearish signal?
| Potential confirmation | Zebra | Nordson |
|---|---|---|
| Organic growth slows | Negative | Negative |
| Margins normalize | Important risk | Less concerning unless significant |
| Backlog/order growth slows | Important | Very important |
| Multiple compression | Possible | Major risk |
| Post-earnings highs fail | Technical confirmation | Technical confirmation |
26. Foxorox final conclusion
Zebra Technologies and Nordson Corporation are examples of why stock analysis cannot stop at the income statement.
Both companies recently reported excellent results.
Zebra delivered:
- 20.4% reported revenue growth,
- 9.2% organic growth,
- 75.9% non-GAAP EPS growth,
- 27.7% adjusted EBITDA margin,
- and higher full-year guidance.
Nordson delivered:
- record $818 million quarterly sales,
- ~12% organic growth,
- 19% adjusted EPS growth,
- 32% EBITDA margin,
- 35% backlog growth,
- and higher guidance.
Yet both stocks currently show bearish sentiment in the Foxorox model.
Foxorox final thesis:
These are not bearish companies.
They are currently bearish stocks from a short-term risk/reward perspective.
The distinction matters.
Strong fundamentals can continue while the stock price corrects.
A high-quality company can become temporarily overextended.
And after strong earnings rallies, future positive surprises may already be embedded in the price.
Between the two, Nordson currently appears more demanding on valuation, while Zebra's main analytical risks are the difference between reported and organic growth, the sustainability of the extraordinary Q2 margin expansion, and rising component costs.
For long-term investors, both companies remain worth watching.
For short-term positioning, Foxorox currently indicates caution.
